# Wrong Planet — Terms of Service & Community Rules

Welcome to Wrong Planet. We’re a volunteer-run community for autistic people, their families, and allies. These Terms cover our sites and services — including `wrongplanet.net`, `classic.wrongplanet.net`, and `discourse.wrongplanet.net`, and everything on them (the forums, chat, blogs, private messages, profiles, and any other feature we offer) — which together we call the “Services.”

**By using the Services, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use them.** You must read and accept these Terms when you register.

## 1. Who can use Wrong Planet

- **You must be 13 or older.** Registration asks for your date of birth, and we turn away anyone under 13. If we learn a user is under 13, we will close the account and delete the associated personal information (see Section 7 and our Privacy Policy).
- If you’re **13–17** , please only use the Services with your parent or guardian’s permission; they’re responsible for your account and your conduct.
- You may not use the Services if we’ve already told you that you may not, or if we’ve banned you (unless we’ve lifted the ban in writing).

## 2. Your account

- **One account per person.** Please don’t create extra accounts (“sock puppets”) or register with a throwaway email. Don’t impersonate anyone — including staff, moderators, or other members.
- Give **accurate** registration information, and keep your email up to date.
- **Keep your password secret** , and you’re responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you think it’s been compromised.
- You may close your account at any time by contacting us (Section 15).
- We may **rename or reclaim** usernames that impersonate others, are offensive, or are used to get around a ban.

## 3. How we expect people to behave (the rules)

Wrong Planet is a support community. Many members are vulnerable, and some are minors. **The guiding rule is simple: be kind, be honest, and treat everyone with respect.** These rules apply everywhere on the Services — posts, profiles, chat, private messages, and anything you upload.

**Please do:**

- **Be respectful.** Disagree with ideas all you like; don’t attack the person.
- **Be considerate.** Label or hide distressing, graphic, or difficult content (e.g., a `[CW]` note) so others can choose whether to see it.
- **Respect boundaries and privacy.** Don’t reveal someone’s identity, diagnosis, private history, or personal information without their consent.

**Please don’t:**

- **Harass, threaten, or bully** anyone, or keep contacting someone who has asked you to stop. No **personal attacks** , name-calling, ridicule, or insinuation.
- Post **hateful or discriminatory** content (including racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or ableist content, or slurs), or content that **demeans people’s identities, diagnoses, or disabilities**.
- **Troll** — post to provoke others or disrupt discussions for fun.
- Post anything **illegal** , or anything that **infringes someone’s rights**.
- Post **sexual or pornographic content** , or anything that **sexualizes minors** (we report that to authorities).
- Post **graphic violence** , or content encouraging **self-harm or suicide**.
- **Doxx** anyone, or share information you don’t have the right to share.
- **Spam** , advertise, or post scams, malware, or referral/affiliate links.
- **Evade a ban** , or encourage or help anyone else break these rules.
- Argue with or harass **moderators and staff**.

**A note on the kind of community this is:** Wrong Planet is **peer support, not professional advice.** Nothing here is medical, legal, or financial advice, and you shouldn’t rely on it as such. If you’re in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis line.

## 4. Moderation and enforcement

- **Moderators are volunteers.** They help keep the community civil, and they don’t speak officially for Wrong Planet.
- **We reserve the right to moderate.** At our discretion, with or without notice, we may **remove, edit, move, or delete content** , and **warn, restrict, suspend, or permanently ban any account** — for breaking these rules or for any other conduct we believe is harmful to the community. You may **no longer use the Services** if we tell you that you may not.
- Most problems are handled gently, but serious violations (or repeated ones) can mean an immediate and permanent ban. **Ban evasion leads to a longer ban.**
- We may report unlawful content or conduct to law enforcement where appropriate.
- If you think a moderation decision was wrong, please raise it **calmly and privately** (Section 15) — don’t start public complaint threads or brigades.

## 5. Your content

- **You keep ownership** of what you post.
- **You give us permission** to host, store, display, and share your content as part of running the Services — to copy, publish, and make it available to other users. This permission lasts as long as your content is on the Services (and for a reasonable time afterward for backups and caches).
- **You’re responsible for your content.** Only post things you have the right to post, and don’t post content that infringes anyone’s rights or breaks the law.
- We don’t have to store or keep any content, and we don’t endorse what members post.
- If you believe something on the Services infringes your copyright, contact us (Section 15) and we’ll look into it and remove infringing content where appropriate.

## 6. Third-party content and advertising

- The Services may include **advertising** and links to other websites. We don’t control and aren’t responsible for **third-party sites, products, or content** — use them at your own risk, and their own terms and privacy practices apply.

## 7. Privacy — no expectation of privacy (but we do our best)

- **Please understand: there is no expectation of privacy on Wrong Planet.** What you post is visible to others and may be seen, copied, or shared by anyone. Even **private messages are not a confidential or secure channel** — please don’t use them for sensitive personal, medical, financial, or legal information.
- **We aim to do our best to protect your information** , and we don’t sell it. We limit who can access it, and staff only look at content when needed to run the Services, enforce these Terms, protect members, or comply with the law.
- We collect and store information you provide (such as your email, date of birth, optional gender, and posts) plus **technical data such as IP addresses** , which we record to help enforce these Terms and keep the community safe.
- Our **Privacy Policy** ([Privacy Policy - Wrong Planet](https://wrongplanet.net/privacy-policy)) explains this in more detail and is part of these Terms.

## 8. No warranty — use at your own risk

- **The Services and all content are provided “as is” and “as available,” with no warranty, guarantee, or promise of any kind.** As far as the law allows, we make no warranties that the Services will be available, uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that content will be accurate or reliable.
- **You accept all risk of using the Services and their content.** You use them at your own risk.

## 9. Limits on liability

- As far as the law allows, neither Wrong Planet nor the people who run it (owners, operators, moderators, volunteers, or service providers) will be liable to you for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Services — even if we were told it was possible.
- As far as the law allows, our total liability for any claim related to the Services is limited to **US $50**.
- Some places don’t allow certain limits, so some of the above may not apply to you.

## 10. Your responsibility

- You agree to be responsible for the content you post and for how you use the Services. If your use of the Services or your content causes a legal claim against us by someone else, you agree to help cover the resulting losses and reasonable costs.
- You don’t need to take responsibility for anything caused by our own misconduct.

## 11. Ending the agreement

- **You** may stop using the Services and close your account at any time.
- **We** may end or suspend your access at any time as described in Section 4.
- When our agreement ends, your permission to use the Services ends too. Sections that by their nature should continue (such as content permissions, disclaimers, and limits on liability) will continue to apply.

## 12. Feedback

If you send us feedback or suggestions, we’re free to use them without payment or obligation, and you agree not to send us anything you consider confidential or proprietary.

## 13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we’ll post the updated version (with a new “Last updated” date) here, and where practical we’ll let you know. **If you keep using the Services after a change, you accept the updated Terms.** If you don’t agree, please stop using the Services.

## 14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which Wrong Planet is operated, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. We’ve written these Terms to be reasonable; **we don’t require you to give up rights you have under the mandatory law where you live.**

1. **Be kind and respectful.** No harassment, hate, slurs, or personal attacks.
